OSCAAR Super Late Models News & Notes – June 27, 2013

Anticipation and excitement continues to build for the 15th annual Don Biederman Memorial for the OSCAAR Super Late Model tour at Sunset International Speedway on June 29 & June 30. Over 30 drivers are expected to be in attendance for 50-lap features on back-to-back nights for the first time in OSCAAR history. A handful of drivers have added their name to the list over the past few days.

Former OSCAAR tour regular Lloyd Ritchie (No. 62 Standing Arrow Smoke Shop) has stated he will be in attendance for both nights of competition this weekend at Sunset. Ritchie, who earned his first and only career OSCAAR win at Peterborough Speedway on September 3, 2011, has not been able to compete full-time since building a new home on the shores of Lake Huron in Southampton, Ont. and the birth of his youngest son.

Ritchie made a pair of appearances in 2012, at Sauble Speedway and Varney Speedway Motorplex for an exhibition show. The ‘Orange Blossom Special’ is for sale, but Ritchie is making one last entry in what is conceivably the final OSCAAR start of his career.

Rookie driver Rob Gibson (No. 3 Chevrolet) is set to make his first career OSCAAR qualifying attempt this weekend. Gibson, who purchased the chassis formerly driven by Tyler Hawn over the offseason, has spent the past several months preparing the car by himself. The Orillia, Ont. driver will finally get to enjoy the fruits of his labour at his former hometrack this weekend.

Corey Jones (No. 82 RBC/Remax) will put his OSCAAR debut appearance on hold this weekend. Jones stated late Wednesday that his team will not be able to finish the Shane Gowan/Kelly Hallett-prepared entry prior to Saturday. The Shakespeare, Ont. driver will instead make his first career Super Late Model start at Flamboro Speedway on July 20, 2013.

Jones was expected to pull double duty on Sunday as he competes in the second leg of the Don Biederman Memorial and the fourth round of the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modified tour. Jones has secured sponsorship for his OSCAAR entry from Royal Bank of Canada, Remax – Troy Schmidt and Lydia Miu, Accountable Automotive, Anmar Cleaning Inc., Lafleche Roofing, Octane Productions, and Innotech Machine Shop. Four-time Biederman Memorial champion Jeff Hanley (No. 70 Raylene Racing Toyota) is expected to be in the field for the Biederman event, marking the first start of the season for the Georgetown, Ont. driver. Hanley won his last start with OSCAAR at Sunset last season and has three wins in the last two seasons running a part-time schedule with the tour.

Hanley is the only four-time winner of the Biederman, winning each year from 2008 to 2011. In addition to his own car, Hanley has put extensive time in to preparing cars for Paul Law and Mike Beyore, among others, who will both make their season debuts as well this weekend.

OSCAAR Modified tour regular Brent McLean (No. 47 Bowmanville Home Building Centre Chevrolet) has announced he will pull double duty this weekend, making his second career Super Late Model appearance. McLean attempted to start on opening night at Sunset, but motor problems kept the team from starting the main event. The Conn, Ont. driver`s motor has been repaired and McLean`s entire crew is thrashing to have the car ready for Saturday. McLean has one win this season at Barrie in a modified, as well as a second place finish.

The OSCAAR Super Late Model tour will host 50-lap feature events on back-to-back nights for the first time in series history on June 29 & June 30 at Sunset International Speedway as part of Canada Day weekend. OSCAAR will use time trials to qualify drivers for the first time since July 9, 2011 at Sauble Speedway. Racing starts at 6:30pm each night. Spectator gates open at 5:00pm.

The OSCAAR Super Late Model tour is presented by a number of dedicated sponsors throughout Ontario, including: Knightworks Design, Hoosier Racing Tire, Klotz Synthetics Canada, Race2way.ca, Dave Franks Photos, Dickson Printing, Finishline Fabrication, McColl Racing Enterprises, McGunegill Engine Performance, Stefko Racing Engines, VP Racing Fuels, OntarioOval.com, RaceTime Radio, Inside Track Motorsport News, Jenco Equipment, Midas of Orangeville, Reinhart Trailer Sales, North Toronto Auctions, and South Shore Services.
