OSCAAR Hot Rod Series at Sunset Speedway Preview

OSCAAR Hot Rods at Sunset Speedway 2017

Alas, the snow has finally melted and the race season is about to be put into full gear. The OSCAAR Hot Rod Series will be the first of the three divisions to hit the track this year, and in the most fitting way possible as they will help Sunset Speedway celebrate their 50th anniversary.

It will mark the second time the Hot Rods have raced at Sunset Speedway, following their inaugural appearance at the Velocity 250 last September. Both of those races were won by Dan Archibald, but not without competition as he was challenged for the lead by the likes of Tyler Hawn, Kenny McNicol, and Lance Foster.

Hawn will be one of the drivers hoping to get to victory lane after a successful campaign in 2017 that saw him take home the inaugural series championship. Consistency was crucial to his success last year, following six top-fives, but that was also highlighted by a pair of convincing victories.

Douglas Fischer hopes that his trend of continued improvement in each event pays off. After making his OSCAAR debut at Sunset Speedway last year with a seventh and a sixth, he backed it up with a third at Flamboro Speedway. Is he ready to score a victory?

Nick Clarke knows what it takes to win in OSCAAR, as he was one of the four drivers to score a victory last year, following a pair at Flamboro Speedway. However, it is also worth noting that he placed ninth in both Sunset Speedway races last season.

“I’m excited to get back into the car and race in an amazing series,” he said. “We struggled at the start of the season but ended on a high note and our team is hoping that will just get better come opening night at Sunset.”

It was surprising to see Dan Price miss visiting victory lane last year, but nobody will overlook his ride in 2018 as the Black Widow paint scheme has already became the talk of social media. To date, he has a career-best fourth in OSCAAR Hot Rod Series competition, and finished fifth in both Sunset Speedway races last year.

Price’s teammate Derek Henderson will also be one to watch, as he will make the shift to taking part in the series full-time following a couple events behind the wheel of Price’s No. 09 Chevrolet last year. Henderson was solid in both of his starts, placing fourth at Kawartha and third at Flamboro.

Sunset Speedway was the sight of Foster’s OSCAAR debut, and he made the most of it as he challenged Archibald for the lead. However, a spin would result in him placing outside of the top-10. If he has the same speed this time around, expect him to run up front all feature long.

The 2018 season opener will mark the OSCAAR Hot Rod Series debut for Billy Rhame, as he joins the fray after having competed in Full Throttle Motor Speedway’s street stock division since 2011. He knows what it takes to do well, having won the track’s championship twice.

You will also have to keep an eye on former Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup and Mini Stock stand-out Brad Martin as he makes his debut. He has previously visited victory lane at Sunset Speedway as part of the track’s fall Velocity show in the Mini Stock division.

“I hope I can have some success in the series,” Brad Martin said. “I’ve always liked OSCAAR and how the series is run; a lot of good guys in it, and hopefully I can become one of those good guys that everyone cheers for.”

Jeremy McLean hopes to insert himself in the conversation for the victory following success at the mini stock level.

The show at Sunset Speedway will get underway at 5pm ET. On top of the OSCAAR Hot Rod Series, the track will also have their own Late Models, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bone Stocks on hand, as well as the Ontario Legends Series season opener.
