Sophie Horton Ready for Rookie OSCAAR Pro Sprint Campaign

After having success in dirt go-karts, Sophie Horton will make the next step of her racing career, joining the OSCAAR Pro Sprint ranks in 2018.

“I’m actually really excited to start the new season,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the competition and hoping to do well.”

Horton will become the fourth female driver to ever compete in the division following Katherine Summers, Kelly Summers, and McKenzie Hamilton last year.

“Being the only girl in a group of boys is something I’ve grown accustom to in years of racing,” she said. “But I really hope that by putting myself out there I can be seen by little girls like myself who will be able to see there’s room for them in a male-dominated sport like racing and know that they can be just as good (if not better) of a racer as a boy could be.”

Coming off the heels of a successful test at Flamboro Speedway, Horton enters the year ready to get as much as seat time as possible first and foremost.

For Horton, the decision was made by her and her dad Mike to make the move to OSCAAR following the success on dirt at Merritville Speedway as they both believe it’s a great place to start her asphalt racing career. Looking through her memorial career moments to date, she says it’s hard to choose a single one that stands out.

“I remember my first feature win in Novice 2 like it was yesterday, but also finishing third overall in the Junior 2 division was a huge accomplishment for me that I’m very proud of,” she commented.

She will hope to make new memories this season, beginning at Sunset Speedway on May 20 in the Advantage Powder Coating 25. While admitting she’s excited for all the tracks on the schedule, Sunset was one of those initially circled on the schedule.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sunset and I’d love to be able to race there soon,” she said.
