BEHIND THE WHEEL: 4 OSCAAR Hot Rod Drivers To Watch Going Into Delaware Speedway

LONDON, Ontario — After excitement across the province this year, the Qwick Wick Fire Starter OSCAAR Hot Rods are ready for the Great Canadian Weekend at Delaware Speedway on Saturday, September 24.

Ryan Cowan looks to keep the improvement rolling, after scoring a top-10 in four his last five series appearances. He has placed 12th and 10th in his pair of showings at the half-mile.

“We had probably the worst outing we have had all season at Sunset,” Cowan admitted. “The car was unpredictable and nearly impossible to handle, It was demonically bad to drive. The gas pedal may as well have been a spin out switch. So this week we are on the scales figuring out what went wrong and hopefully putting some tires from this year on the car for the first time.

“We really want that top five on the season but time is running out and we have to get back to performing.”

Nick Clarke hopes to keep the pretty in the blue mustang, along with the current momentum following a pair of back-to-back podium appearances. He picked up a runner-up at Delaware in July, to go with two top-10’s in three appearances.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to Delaware,” Clarke commented. “I felt we had a good handling car when we were there in July, but a couple mechanical issues hurt our speed. I’m confident that we should be able to run well. That would be an awesome place to get a win at this year.”

Jordan Morris is hoping to perform well at his home track on the tour, after seeing mechanical issues wreck havoc on his effort back in July. He was 10th in the most recent feature ran on the tour at Flamboro Speedway.

“We are hoping that we have a better than we did at the last event at Delaware,” Morris shared. “We blew our motor up earlier in the season at Sunset and have had some struggles with horsepower since putting the new one in. However, we believe it’s back up to par! Especially since we had some descent lap times in our last race out and we hope to gain off of them. All in all, I think our hopes going into it are to get a top 10 finish or better. I don’t feel that we have the car to win, but ultimately we’re running a steel bodied street stock against a bunch of late models.

“Nick and Bill Clarke have been a huge help in helping us out with parts, engines and their overall knowledge. Adam and Terry at Carquest have also been a huge help for keeping the car on track week after week with parts and willing to get their hands dirty. Finally, my Dad, if it wasn’t for him this car wouldn’t look the way it does or even see a track. He never gives up, if something is a struggle he will work round the clock to figure it out and make sure we are able to race week after week. I’m just really hoping we can keep it in one piece and finish the season off strong.”

After scoring the victory in the V8 Stock feature on Friday night at Delaware, Mat Hopkins will be looking for another solid run in OSCAAR competition following an eighth at Flamboro last month. He has also been strong in OSCAAR Delaware events with a sixth back in July.

“We blew our motor and were out for the year,” he shared. “And a fellow driver Steve Adam’s ( cheesy ) has lent me his crate for the rest of the year. We’re just looking to have fun and run a clean race and bring the car home in one piece unlike last race at Delaware.”
