Starting the year off with strength, Herb Walters put together a couple solid runs en route to placing ninth in the Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modifieds presented by Just Foam It standings.
The rookie came out swinging at Spring Velocity, placing third and fifth in his heats. It set him out to start just outside of the top-five, but he was able to grab fifth in the opening 15 laps. From there, he battled hard through the second half and made another pass en route to crossing the finish line in fourth.
He attempted to carry the momentum to the beach, placing sixth and third in his heats to set him to take the green flag mid-pack in the feature. He broke into the top-10 early, but ultimately went for a spin in turn three on Lap 10. He was credited with a 16th-place finish.
Returning to Sunset, he began the evening off solidly with a fourth and fifth in qualifying. Another deep starting spot in the field did no favors for him, as he scored a 15th-place finish. He was able to rebound at Delaware Speedway a week later, turning a great effort in his heats to a 10th-place finish despite climbing the backstretch wall midway through.
He was able to rebound quickly, placing second in his first heat three weeks later at Sunset, but suffered a spin in the second qualifier. Despite this, he took the green flag from the pole in the feature, but ultimately faded back to ninth at the checkered flag.
A third and fourth in qualifying at Peterborough allowed him to take the green flag from fourth in August, with a consistent performance leading to an eighth-place finish. Unfortunately, the momentum did not follow him to Flamboro Speedway, as mechanical issues led to a 14th.
A couple weeks off, and a return to the tour for the finale at Peterborough Speedway saw him take the feature from last after issues in qualifying. He was unable to make up much ground, crossing the finish line in 15th.
Despite being faced with adversity and mechanical gremlins, Herb Walters kept pushing through each of the weekends striving for strong finishes. Ultimately, a couple highlights resulted in a solid ninth-place finish in the year-end standings.
